Wills, Admons and Inventories

Most of these Wills, Admons and Inventories – some of which were very difficult to read – have been transcribed by Roy White, Gwent, Wales.

This is the last Will and Testament of me Ann Grenfell wife of John Grenfell of the Parish of Zennor in the County of Cornwall.
I give and bequeath unto my Son in Law William Grenfell a Silver Table Spoon having the letters E.S. stamped thereon.
Also. I give and bequeath unto my Nephew John Lugg my Clock.
Also. I give devise and bequeath unto Ann Jelbart Eddy (Daughter of my Niece Elizabeth Leggoe ) my Bureau, my Silver Tea Spoons and Sugar Tongs having the initials A.S. stamped on them. Also after the decease of my husband John Grenfell my Dwelling House with all the appurtenances thereto belonging situate at Saint Buryan Church Town.
Also. I give devise and bequeath unto Elizabeth Leggoe (Daughter of my said Niece Elizabeth Leggoe) my Large Gold Ring.
Also. I give devise and bequeath unto Thomas Jennings Leggoe son of my said Niece Elizabeth Leggoe my Silver Tea Spoons and a table spoon having the initials T.S. stamped on them.
Also. I give devise and bequeath unto my Brother Thomas Jelbart my Mahogany dining table.
Also. I give devise and bequeath unto my Brother John Jelbart my Mahogany Pillar and Claw Table.
Also after the decease of my husband John Grenfell I give devise and bequeath unto my Brothers Thomas Jelbart and John Jelbart and my half sister Mary Williams my two Dwelling Houses with all that pertain thereto situate in Camborne Church Town.
All the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Goods personal and Testamentary Whatsoever and Wheresoever or of what nature or kind soever I shall die possessed of or entitled unto I hereby give and bequeath unto my beloved Husband John Grenfell whom I nominate and appoint Whole and Sole Executor of this my Will. And I hereby Revoke all former and other Will or Wills by me at any time heretofore made and declare this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I the said Ann Grenfell the Testatrix have to this my Last Will set my Name and affixed my Seal this the sixth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty one.

Having died Intestate, admon granted 20th.July 1743.

I Elizabeth Grenfield do make this my Last will in manner and few words following.
Imprimus, I give and bequeath to my Sister Jane Thomas after the death of my Executrix hereafter named all my Tynn bounds in the County of Cornwall during her life and after her death to her sonne Hercules (?).
I give and bequeath to the poor of the Borrough of Truro the sum of fower pounds. I give and bequeath to my ( WORD MISSING) BUT SHOULD PROBABLY BE SISTER)
Elloner Ackland the sum of twenty shillings.
I give and devise all the rest of my Estate both reall and personall to my Sister Kathryn and her only I do make my Executrix. Witness my hand and seale the Sixteenth day of Aprill 1733.

In the Name of God Amen I James Grenfell of the Parrish of St.Just in Penwith in the County of Cornwall Tinner being weak in body but of Sound and perfect Mind and Memory blessed be Almighty God for the same do make and publish this My last will and Testament in manner and form following (That is to say).
First. I give and bequeath to My Eldest Son William the sum of fifteen pounds to be paid him when he attains at the age of Twenty Two Years and my best sute of wearring apparell, and a Comptenent Maintainance such as him I shall hereafter Name as guardian over my Executors shall think proper for him until the second day of February next come Twelve Months which will be in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred fforty three.
Item.I also give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth the sum of five pounds and one guinea to her children to be paid at the end of twelve months after my Decease.
Item. I also give and bequeath to my Daughter Jone the sum of fifteen pounds to be paid her when she attains the age of twenty fower years and fifteen shillings yearly paid during the (?) time.
Item. I also give and bequeath to my Daughter Jane the sum of fifteen pounds to be paid her when she attains at the said age of twenty fower years and to have a Comptenent Maintainance until she attains the age of twenty one years such as the Guardian shall think proper for her.
Item. I give and bequeath to my Son Richard the sum of Ten pounds to be paid him at such time as my Son John shall attain at the age of twenty one years.
Lastly. As to the rest residue and remainder of My Personal Estate Goods and Chattells of what kind or nature soever I give and bequeath the same to my two younger Sons the said Richard and John Joyntly Alike to be divided between them, whom I hereby appoint Sole Executors of this My Last Will and Testament, revoking all former Wills by me made.
I do also appoint My Brother in Law John Tonkin Guardian over my Executors, In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set My Hand and Seal the Ninth day of June One Thousand Seven Hundred and fforty two.

NO WILL. DIED INTESTATE.

In the name of God Amen I John Granvill of the Parrish of St.Just in the County of Cornwall being verry sick and Weake butt Blessed be God of perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the Mortallity of this Life knowing that itt is Appointed for all men once to Die doo make and ordaine this my Last Will and Testament and principally and first of all I recommend and bequeath my soull into the hands of Allmighty God that gave itt and my Boddey to the Earth to be Buried in a Christian Like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executrix and for the wordly goods that God has been pleased to Endow me with I give and bequeath in manner and form following.

First I give unto my Daughter Margrett Mathews the Sum of Twenty Three Pounds to be paid her twelve months after my decease also one fetther bed one Boulster and one pillow all of fetthers.
2ly. I give my Daughter Loveday Ankerwis The sum of ten pounds to be paid her Twelve months after my decease And my Right in Wheale Carne in Wm.pegollys (?) work that is to say one deale in thirteen deales of Adventure also one  deale in fourteen of the Trubbitt.
3ly. I give my Grandson Jn.Ankerwis The sum of ten pounds to be paid him when my Executrix Shall Think Fitt.
4ly. I give my Son in Law Thomas Ankerwis my best sut of clothes.
5ly. and Lastly I make my Wife Elizabeth my full Executrix of all the remainder of my Goods and Chattells waht soo ever moveable and unmoveable. Witness my hand and seale The 10th. Day of December 1741

This is the last Will and Testament of John Grenfell, Carpenter, of the Parish of Sancreed in the County of Cornwall.
I give, and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife, Elizabeth Grenfell, for the term of her natural life, an Annuity of Twenty Five Pounds , to be paid her quarterly, on the usual quarter days; and the first payment to be made on the first quarter day which shall happen after my decease, and to be issuing, due, and payable out of my Estate called Trannack Mill, and out of my Premises at Chapel Place, situate in the Parish of Sancreed, together with sufficient household furniture for one person..
I give and bequeath, to my son John, for the term of his natural life, two annuities, One of Eight Pounds, to be paid to him quarterly, on the usual quarter days, and the first payment to be made on the first quarter day which shall happen after my decease; and another of Six Pounds to be paid to him quarterly, on the usual quarter days, and the first payment of this last annuity to be made on the first quarter day which shall happen after his Mothers decease, and to be issuing, due, and payable out of my Estate called Trannack Mill, and out of my Premises at Chapel Place, situate in the Parish of Sancreed aforesaid..
I give, and bequeath, to my daughter Elizabeth, for the term of her natural life, an Annuity of Six Pounds, to be paid to her quarterly, on the usual quarter days, and the first payment to be made on the first quarter day which shall happen after my decease. I charge this annuity on my Premises situate at Newlyn, in the Parish of Paul..
I also give, devise, and bequeath to my son George Grenfell, whom I constitute, make and ordain, the sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament, and residuary legatee; All and Singular my Lands, Tenements and Messuages, and all other Property whatsoever, and wheresoever, and of what kind soever the same may be, by him freely to bepossessed and enjoyed for his own absolute use. And I charge my Executor to pay all my just debts, dues, and demands, and each and every of the before mentioned Annuities. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fourth day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty two..

Died Intestate.

This is the last Will and Testament of me Nicholas Grenfell of the parish of Saint Just in Penwith, in the County of Cornwall, Gentleman.
I direct that all my just debts be paid so soon after my death as conveniently may be.
I give and Devise unto my good friends Samuel Harvey of Trevear in the parish of Sennen and Richard Wellington of the Borough of Penzance Gentlemen ( subject to the annuity of Forty Pounds hereinafter mentioned) All those my several Freehold Estates Tenements Lands Hereditaments and premises called Carlartha, Trease, Boscaswell, and Bosean situate respectively in the said parish of Saint Just And also all those my several Tin Stamping Mills and premises situate in Chyrose, Bojewyan, Trewellard and Bosean in Saint Just aforesaid.
To hold the same respectively unto the said Samuel Harvey and Richard Wellington and the survivor of them and the heirs and assigns of such survivor upon the Trusts nevertheless and to and for the several uses ends intents and purposes hereinafter expressed and declared of and concerning the same (That is to say) Upon Trust to pay apply and dispose of the rents issues and profits thereof to and for the use and benefit of my Grandson Henry Grenfell the only son of my late son Henry Grenfell deceased until he shall attain the age of twenty one years and when and so soon as he shall attain that age Then as to for and concerning the said several Estates Tenements Lands Stamping Mills Hereditaments and premises Upon Trust to and for the only proper use benefit and behoof of my said Grandson Henry Grenfell his heirs and assigns thenceforth for ever, subject to the payment of the Annuity of Forty Pounds hereinafter charged thereon. And in case my said Grandson shall happen to die before he shall attian the age of twenty one years but leaving issue him surviving Then as to for and concerning all my said Freehold Estates Tenements Lands Stamping Mills Hereditaments and premises Upon Trust to and for the sole use benefit and behoof of such issue their his and her heirs and assigns for ever, And should my said Grandson die before attaining the age of twenty one years with no issue him surviving, Then as to for and concerning All my said several Freehold Estates Tenements Lands Stamping Mills Hereditaments and premises Upon Trust to and for the sole use benefit and behoof of All my Grandchildren which shall be living at the time of my death their several and respective Heirs and Assigns for ever share and share alike as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants, subject nevertheless in either case to the said Annuity of Forty Pounds.
I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter in law Eliza Grenfell the Widow of my said son Henry Grenfell during the term of her natural life or so long thereof as she shall continue his Widow but no longer One Annuity or Yearly sum of Forty Pounds to be Issuing and payable out of all my said several Freehold Estates Tenements Lands Stamping Mills Hereditaments and premises and which I hereby charge therewith, the said annuity to be paid by four equall quarterly payments at Lady Day, Midsummer, Michaelmas and Christmas day in every year the first payment thereof to be made on such of the said days as shall next happen after my death and I do hereby give full power and authority to the said Eliza Grenfell to distrain the said several Hereditaments or either of them for payment of the said annuity or any part thereof in case the same shall be in arrear and unpaid for the space of twentyone days.
Also I give devise and bequeath unto my Granddaughter Eliza Trezise the wife of George Trezise during the term of her natural life one Annuity or yearly sum of Ten Pounds to be issuing and payable out of all that my Freehold Estate Lands Hereditaments and premises called Trigaseal in the said parish of Saint Just and which I charge therewith the said last mentioned annuity to be also paid by quarterly payments on the days hereinbefore mentioned the first payment thereof to be made on such of the said days as shall first happen after my death And I hereby give the like power and authority to distrain for payment of the said last mentioned annuity or any part thereof in case the same shall be in arrears and unpaid for the space of twentyone days as is given in respect of the said annuity of Forty Pounds.
I give and Devise unto my Grandson Nicholas Grenfell Williams All that my said Freehold Estate Lands Hereditaments and premises in or called Trigaseal aforesaid To Hold the same unto my said Grandson Nicholas Grenfell Williams His Heirs and Assigns for ever subject to the payment of the said Annuity of Ten Pounds charged thereon as aforesaid.
I also give and bequeath unto and to the use of the said Eliza Trezise her Executors Administrators and Assigns All that my Leasehold Dwelling House and premises being No.7, situate in Lafrowda Terrace in the Church Town of the said parish of Saint Just.
I also give and bequeath unto and to the use of my Granddaughter Eliza Grenfell the only daughter of my said son Henry Grenfell her Executors Administrators and Assigns All that my Leasehold Dwelling House No.6, situate in Lafrowda Terrace aforesaid with the premises thereto belonging.
I also give and bequeath unto and to the use of my Grandson Humphry Williams his Executors Administrators and Assigns All that my Leasehold Dwelling House and premises being No.4, situate in Lafrowda Terrace aforesaid.
I also give and bequaeth unto and to the use of my Grandson John Williams his Executors Administrators and Assigns All that my Leasehold Dwelling House and premises being No.5, situate in Lafrowda Terrace aforesaid.
I also give and bequaeth unto and to the use of my said two Grandsons Humphrey Williams and John Williams their respective Executors Administrators and Assigns as Tenants in Common and not as joint tenants All those my eight several Dwelling Houses and premises now occupied by Matthew Giles and others and commonly known as the Chapel Street Lease situate in Chapel Street in the Church Town of Saint Just aforesaid.
All my Money Securities for money And all the rest residue and remainder of my Leasehold premises Goods Chattels rights credits property and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever that I shall die possessed of or entitled unto and not hereinbefore given or disposed of I do hereby give and bequeath the same and every of them and every part and parcel thereof unto the said Samuel Harvey and Richard Wellington their Executors Administrators and Assigns But On Trust nevertheless and to and for the several uses ends intents and purposes hereinafter mentioned expressed and declared of and concernimg the same, that is to say, Upon Trust thereout in the first place to pay the several sums following. Viz. unto my six several Grandchildren hereinbefore named and called Nicholas Grenfell Williams, Eliza Trezise, John Williams, Humphrey Williams, Eliza Grenfell and Henry Grenfell the sum of Three Hundred Pounds each and to my other Grandson Henry Williams the sum of One Hundred Pounds to whom I give and bequeath the same, one moiety of each such sums respectively shall be paid at the expiration of six months aftre my death and the other moiety twelve months after my decease, and unto my servant Jane Trembath in case she shall be living with me at the time of my death the sum of Ten Pounds three months after my decease to whom I give and bequeath the same and also unto the Wesleyan Missionary Society the sum of Ten Pounds to whom I give and bequeath the same one moiety thereof to be paid at the first Missionary meeting to be held at Saint Just next after my death, and the other moiety thereof at the Missionary meeting to be held there in the following year And also that my said Trustees shall be at full liberty to retain or pay themselves thereout the sum of Ten Pounds apiece as a remuneration for the trouble they may be at in the Execution of the Trusts hereby imposed on them , And as to for and concerning all the residue or surplus of my said money securities for money and Residuary Estate and Effects aftre the several payments aforesaid and the payment of my just debts and Funeral and all other expenses, Upon Trust to and for the sole and only use and benefit of my said six firstnamed Grandchildren their several and respective Executors Administrators and Assigns as Tenants in Common to whom I give and bequeath the same but nevertheless to be divided and apportioned amongst them in such parts shares manner and form as my said Trustees shall in their discretion deem just and reasonable save and except as to my said Grandson Nicholas Grenfell Willimas it being my Will and devise that in such Division the Lease of the premises in which I live shall be apportioned to him. And I hereby nominate and appoint the said Samuel Harvey and Richard Wellington Executors in Trust of this my Will hereby revoking all former and other will and wills by me at any time heretofore made, In Witnedd whereof I the said Testator Nichols Grenfell have to this my Last Will and Testament contained in four sheets of paper, set my hand to the first, second. and third sheets, and my hand and seal to this fourth sheet thereof the twentyseventh day of March in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty five, (1855)

I Pascoe Grenfell, of the Town of Penzance, in the County of Cornwall, being advanced in Years, and Considering the Frailty of this Mortal Life, have now thoyght fit to make this my Last Will, and Testament, in manner and form following. Imprimis. My Will is that all my just Debts, funeral Charges, and necessary Expenses attending the same, be fully paid, as soon as coveniently may be, after my decease. Itme. I give and bequeath unto my Eldest Son John, and his heirs, all that House and Premises in Marketjew Street, wherein now I live, his time to commence therin, as soon as my just Debts are answered and not before. Item. I give, devise and bequeath, unto my son William, All my Houses, Cellers, and Premises, with the Appurtenances thereto belonging, lying below the Chappel Yard in Penzance, to him and his heirs for ever; and also the Sum of One Hundred Pounds, to be paid him, as soon as he attains the age of Twenty One Years, with Interest from my decease. Item. I give, devise, and bequaeth, unto my son George, all those Houses and Premises, in Marketjew Street formerly purchased of Mr.John Jenkins, wherein Henry Mitchell, William Thomas and Roger Ellis now live, to him and his heirs for ever; And also the Sum of One Hundred Pounds, to be paid him, when he attains the age of Twenty One Years, with Interest from my decease. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Phillis, the sum of Three Hundred Pounds, to be paid her One year after my decease, with Interest for the same. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Mary, the sum of Three Hundred Pounds, to be paid her at the age of Twenty One years, with Interest from my decease. Item. I give and bequeath to my said Daughters, Phillis and Mary , all their Mothers Cloaths of what nature or kind soever, to be delivered them immediately on my decease, to be equally divided between them, share and share alike. Lastl. All the Rest, Residue, and Remainder of my Messuages, Lands and Tenements, Goods, Chattells, Credits, rael and personal Estate whatsoever, ( not herein before given, devised, or bequeathed), after my said Debts, funeral charges, and necessary expenses aforesaid, and all the above Legacies, are fully paid, or secured, I give, devise and bequeath unto my sons John and Pascoe, to be equally divided between them , share and share alike, to them and their heirs for ever, And in case either of my said sons, John and Pascoe, shall happen to die unmarryed, before my effects are divided, and before the abovesaid Legacies are paid, or secured, then my Will is that the survivor shall pay to each of my other children, then living, the sum of One Hundred Pounds, and in case of the death of any or either of my four younger children, before payment of the several Legacies abovesaid, that then the Legacy or Legacys of such child or children (so dying before Payment) shall be equally divided between all the rest of my children the living, share and share alike. And I do hereby subject all my Messuages, Lands and Tenements, except those before particularly given, devised or bequeathed to the payment of my Debts and Legacies as aforesaid. And I do hereby make, name and appoint my said sons John and Pascoe, the whole and sole joynt Executors of this my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and making void any former or other Will or Wills by me at any time heretofore made. The last will and Testament of Pascoe Grenfell of the Town of Dodgeville County of Iowa and State of Wisconsin.
I Pascoe Grenfell considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory , blessed be Almighty God for the same , do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and
And form following (that is to Say).
First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Jane Grenfell the sum of Two Hundred Dollars.

Item, I give and bequeath unto my eldest son John T. Grenfell the sum of one dollar.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my four sons, William P. Grenfell, Pascoe Grenfell, James Hosea Grenfell and George Edwin Grenfell the sum of one dollar each.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my three daughters Jane Hoskins, Eliza Williams and Nanny T. Bartle the sum of one dollar each.
Which several legacies or sums of money I will and order to be paid to the respective legatees within six months after my decease.

In the name of God Amen I Thomas Grenfell Farmer, of the Parish of Sancreed in the county of Cornwall being in perfect mind memory and understanding do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in the following manner and form.
First I give and bequeath unto my Grandson Thomas Grenfell the sum of One Pound. Also I give and bequeath unto my Grandson Thomas Tresise the sum of One Pound also I give unto my Daughter Elizabeth Kirgeek rhe sum of Ten Shillings
Also I give and bequeath unto my son Richard Grenfell my Interest in Trevorian to hold the same during the Term, and to have four cows and two hiffers and he is also to have five horses a waggon and two carts and he is to have a bed a clock six chairs and a table.
Also I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife my Interest in Lesbew with two horses and three cows and two hiffers.
The resideu and Remainder of my Property the House in Bile croft in St.Just and sixty pounds I give unto my wife during her natural life and after her decease the 60 to fall equally between my son Richard and my son Edward and my daughter Margery.
I also make my wife my Executor to pay all my Just Debts and funeral expenses and all legesas to be paid twelve months after my Decease as Witness our hands this 3rd. day of January one thousand eight hundred and forty seven.

In the name of God Amen the eleventh day of November 1751 I William Grenfell of the Parish of St.Just in Penwith in the County of Cornwall Being Very weak in body but of Perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament. That is to say, principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be Buried in decent Christian Burial at the Discretion of my Executor trusting that at the General Resurrection I shall receive the Same again by the Mighty power of God and as touching such wordly Estate and Goods wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this Life I give devise and dispose of the same in manner and form following.
And first of all I give and bequeath to James Nicholas my Jockey Coat and three plush breeches. Also, I give and bequeath to my two Brothers my three other coats and five wastecoats and two breeches for the two Divide them Between themselves. Also, I give and bequeath to my Beloved Wife Grace, twenty shillings a year, if Noonreeth shall turn out to my part so much Yearly above Cost and Wages. Which said sum my said Wife shall receive During the time she remains a Widow and no longer. And also I give her to live in the house we now Lives in till this Year now in hand is out and also the fewell that now is, with all other conveniences During the said time, and after the time is out, she shall turn out of the said house and Leave all the Household Goods in their place without Defrauding anything or carrying away of any part, therof,or Causing or Letting any other person whatsoever to take or carry away anything out of the said house.
Also,I give to my Beloved Daughter Grace Grenfell whom I likewise constitue and make and ordain my Sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament all and Singular My Goods and Adventures and writing and accounts, and money, and Effects whatsoever, by her freely to be possessed and enjoyed, if she shall live so long as to arrive to age of twenty one years and I do make and ordain my Brother John Grenfell, and my Brother in Law Francis Thomas of Morvah two Guardians over my said Daughter till she shall arrive to the age abovementioned and I do authorise and impower the said Guardians to order my effects as shall be most to the benefit of my said Daughter and they the said Guardians providing and laying out from the said effects for her maintinance as shall be needfull and necessary during the time till she come of age as is abovesaid. But if it shall happen that my said Daughter Grace shall die before she arrive and come to the age of twenty one years as is above mentioned that then and in such cause I give to each of my Sisters, Elizabeth, Jone and Jane, five shillings to be paid them on demands after six months after the death of my said Daughter and all the rest of my Effects after my Daughter is dead of what kind soever I give to my two Brothers to be equally divided between them, with paying my three Sisters five shillings apiece or Each and if it shall happen that either of my Brothers shall be dead at that time then I give all to him that shall be allive.
And I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other former Testaments, Wills, Legacies, Bequeasts and Executors by me in any qways before named, willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament, In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year within written.
